Meet 星空体育 Clinician Nurse Consultant at 星空体育’s Central Sterilising Department Robyn Williams – one of the clinical brains behind the design of the new Coomera Hospital.
To kick things off, tell us about your career journey…
I’ve worked in the Central Sterilising Departments (CSD) at Logan Hospital and across 星空体育, where I’ve gained valuable knowledge of clinical practices and Australian standards.
I’m now applying that knowledge to actively shape the design and functionality of the new CSD at the new Coomera Hospital.
What does your current role involve?
I provide guidance to ensure the hospital meets important safety and quality standards, like the Australian Council on Healthcare Standard (ACHS) and standard AS5369 for reprocessing reusable medical instruments.
My role sits within infection control and involves developing a gap analysis and risk assessment, creating procedures and work instructions, and setting up audits to incorporate these standards into clinical practice. I also review reprocessing instruments and the guidelines to ensure everything is used safely and effectively.
What has your role been in the new Coomera Hospital?
From the early planning stages of the new Coomera Hospital, I've been involved in the Project User Groups (PUGs), making sure every phase of the design aligns with the right standards and supports clinical functionality.
Why is it important clinicians have input into this future facility?
Clinicians are reprocessing reusable medical instruments every day for patient safety.
Do you have a highlight as a Project User Group (PUG) member?
It’s a privilege to work with a diverse team and learn from all the different perspectives.
I’m rewarded by knowing my contributions are helping create a compliant, effective and efficient reprocessing environment for the safe reuse of equipment at the new Coomera Hospital.
What do you hope the new Coomera Hospital will be?
I hope the Coomera Hospital will bring a sense of reassurance to the northern Gold Coast community by providing a local hospital right at their doorstep. It’s also exciting to see how the new hospital will aim to strengthen the entire Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service in delivering even better care to the community.
Lastly, what do you do to stay healthy?
I like to keep things balanced with healthy food, regular walks, plenty of sleep, good music and spending quality time with friends and family.
