星空体育’s Creative Health Hub marked Queensland Youth Week (QYW) with a series of live musical performances, showcasing the talents of young Queenslanders across hospital spaces from 6–12 April.
Held annually, Queensland Youth Week celebrates the achievements and contributions of young people aged 12 to 25.
Among the performers was Amelie, a classically trained violinist at Associate of Music, Australia (AMusA) level. Amelie has been playing violin for eight years, alongside piano, guitar and singing.
“It was really special watching Amelie perform and seeing patients and staff stop to listen – taking a moment to relax and connect with themselves and each other,” said Principal Project Officer Creative Health Laura Strange.
"One visitor started singing along, and every piece she played was met with applause".
Opportunities like this are particularly important as young people continue to face increasing rates of depression, loneliness and social isolation.
“By inviting young musicians into our spaces to perform and connect, we’re helping to build a sense of belonging and contribution – for them and for our entire hospital community,” Laura said.
Amelie’s performance was deeply personal. Inspired by her mother’s recent care at Robina Hospital, she chose to give back through her music.
“It felt amazing to share music with patients and staff at Robina Hospital – it was so heartwarming,” Amelie said.
“The most special moment was when I saw a patient who looked a lot like my late grandpa enjoying my performance. It made me think about what it would have been like to play music for him.
“A couple of months ago, my mother was a patient at Robina Hospital, and the staff’s kindness was so admirable. I knew I wanted to share my gratitude through my music.
“Seeing people’s joy is the main reason I perform – it's so fulfilling. I had a wonderful time performing at Robina Hospital, and I can't wait to do it again.”
Thank you to all the remarkable young people who performed for us during Queensland Youth Week – your contribution to the community is powerful and inspiring.
